Nurse's Role During a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Event

Abstract: Most nurses will experience a cardiopulmonary resuscitation event (code blue) in the hospital at some point in their career. The education given to prepare nurses for these high stress situations is limited to Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training every two years and the role of the nurse is unclear. The purpose of this educational project is to educate approximately 75 sophomore students at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing on the nurse's role during a code blue in a hospital. A PowerPoint slideshow was created to present the following important aspects of this topic: recognition of a deteriorating patient, different healthcare providers present, medications given, BLS guidelines, family presence, and specifically the nurses role during a code. Feedback will be gathered from students through a Likert survey to evaluate whether the session was helpful and educational to nursing students when preparing for their upcoming practice in the hospital. Results of the evaluation and lessons learned will be presented in a poster presentation.
