Abstract: Hospital workers have been identified as the group most likely to experience burnout out of all at-risk careers. In fact, a 2011 study found that 34% of hospital nurses report experiencing symptoms of burnout, as opposed to 22% of nurses working in other settings. Research suggests that this number is even higher in the Emergency Department population. The purpose of our project is to educate nurses in the University of Cincinnati Medical Center Emergency Department about coping strategies and methods to prevent burnout. We conducted a twenty minute educational session paired with a pamphlet and a post education survey. The educational session included information on why burnout happens, how to prevent burnout, coping strategies to deal with burnout, and resources for the nurses to utilize when thinking about burnout in their workplace.
