Abstract: According to mainstream works documenting the history of jazz, influential female instrumentalists are few and far between. Many of these women are not commonly discussed in jazz academia, despite their musical accomplishments. Through analysis and transcription, this study evaluates the musical contribution of masterful jazz instrumentalists occasionally overlooked. In addition, the inclusion of these women in the jazz canon will be addressed. Applied in a jazz education setting, these artists are great role models for aspiring jazz musicians; their reinforced role as important members of jazz history will also appropriately reflect the growing female presence in collegiate programs.
