Mental Health Literacy in Underserved Populations

Abstract: Mental health problems are becoming increasingly acceptable for discussion in media and daily life. However, mental health literacy has not been studied extensively and mental illness can have a more devastating impact on underserved populations that may not know when to seek care or what care is available. The purpose of this project is to increase mental health literacy among underserved individuals at the Recovery Center of Hamilton County. A free education session was provided at the facility to interested clients. A handout with education materials including resources available and warning signs to seek care was also provided. Evaluation was completed through a post-test identifying signs suggestive of the need for medical care as well as open-ended commentary. Results of the evaluation and lessons learned through this project will be shared.
