There is very little research on the design of pediatric patient rooms. The purpose of this study was to obtain information from hospitalized children and their parents regarding the effectiveness of patient room design and its impact on quality of life. We examined the relative impact of two patient rooms: a traditional room design and an evidence-based patient room created through the Adopt-a-Room design initiative (AAR). Forty-one adults and 37 children participated in the study. Higher satisfaction was reported for the AAR. The results of the comparison between subjects in the two environments using the PedsQL tool demonstrated trends in the direction of most hypotheses, but were not statistically significant.
