Abstract

This paper examines the implications and opportunities for child participation raised by the accreditation of child-friendly municipalities in Quebec. This case study is based on a review of the accreditation process in 28 municipalities over a six-year period, interviews with municipal staff and councilors, and an action research project with two accredited municipalities. We found that accreditationis first and foremost utilitarian, but preparing the dossier and the feedback that accompanies accreditation create an impetus for furthering awareness of and activities that promote child participation. Our action research projects illustrate that support and capacity-building can enhance child participation in ways that contribute to municipalities.
