From Curiosity to Collaborations Planning teacher education classes with AI

Abstract

In this personal narrative, the author reflects on their experiences using generative artificial intelligence (AI), specifically ChatGPT to enhance their class preparations and planning for their college courses in early childhood teacher education. Using three personal vignettes, they describe their iterative process working with AI to infuse creativity and content. They capture their own emotions through this journey as well as the reactions of their students. The author concludes by acknowledging the enticing power of collaborating with AI and share future plans to explore students’ prompts as a form of assessment of learning and teaching.

Author Biography

Sudha Swaminathan, Eastern Connecticut State University

Dr. Sudha Swaminathan is a Distinguished Professor of Education and the Director of the Center for Early Childhood Education (CECE) at Eastern Connecticut State University, CT. Her areas of expertise are early childhood math and educational technology. She conducts research at the Center for Early Childhood Education on effective ways to enhance children’s mathematical development during play and has explored the impact of various technology-based applications, including coding, on supporting and challenging children’s socio-cognitive growth. To date, she has over 15 publications in journals such as the Young Children and Childhood Education; and has presented her work at national and international conferences on early childhood education, educational technology and educational research. She is the recipient of several grants, including two Spencer Foundation grants to study the effects of teacher’s interactions during children’s math-play. Dr. Swaminathan earned her masters and doctoral degrees in Early Childhood Education with a concentration in Math Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo, NY.
