The Typography of El Lissitzky

Abstract

Around 1920 there was ferment in all of the a rts. Lissitzky ( 1890- 1941) developed his art during this period and was influenced by such men as Malevich (Suprematism) and Tatlin (Constructivism) . H is typographic innovations a re individua listic and cannot be classified with any single "movement." Lissitzky's work and ideas on typography-of a pre-eminently pictorial quality- are summarized and illustrated.

Author Biographies

  • M. V. Mathews
    M. V. Mathews received his advanced degrees in electrical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined the staff of the Bell Telephone Laboratories (Murray Hill, New Jersey 07971) in 1955 and is currently director of the Behavioral Research Laboratory which, in addition to programmed instruction, does work in the areas of learning, speech communication, vision, psycholinguistics, scaling, and sensory physiology. Dr. Mathews' previous work concerned automatic speech recognition machines and low-channel capacity speech transmission.
  • L. Leering-van Moorsel
    Mrs. Louise Leering-van Moorsel (Veldm. Montgomerylaan 515, Eindhoven, Holland) studied the history of art at the Leiden University, and for her doctoral dissertation made a study of the architecture of J.J.P. Oud and its connections with De Stijl and the Bauhaus. She lectures on the modern collection of the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven (her husband is director) and writes introductions for the museum's catalogues.
