Abstract

Can the computer achieve the same quality composition as a skilled typesetter? The author identifies some factors which contribute to successful esthetic solutions and discusses the compromises that must be considered; for example, in hyphenation and justification. "Feedback" of information and ideas from typographer to computer programmer is encouraged.

John W. Seybold

John W. Seybold is president of Rocappi, Inc. (an acronym for Research on Computer Applications in the Printing and Publishing Industry), Springfield, Pa. 19064. A pioneer in the field of software development for typesetting and related data processing, Mr. Seybold is a former college professor (economics), industrial relations expert, and trade association executive. He has a Master's Degree from the University of Pennsylvania and is the author of The Philadelphia Printing Industry--A Case Study and numerous articles on economic and technical aspects of the printing industry. He is also an active arbitrator.
