Abstract
Relatively little is known about how a child learns to read—i.e., what processes go on in his mind. In dealing with how the beginning reader learns to differentiate graphic symbols, this article considers several related problems: How does preschool experience hamper the child in his initial discrimination of letter-like forms? How does a child learn to differentiate between letters? And between words? What is the correlation between reading and writing? Several reading research programs are discussed.
