Ligature Design for Contemporary Technology

Abstract

Computer-aided composition has eliminated restrictions on the number of characters that can be stored practically in a font of printing type. A system of27ligatures was designed as an addition to both sans-serif and roman fonts. The development of the ligatures in News Gothic and Century Schoolbook typefaces is discussed and illustrated.

Joseph S. Scorsone

Joseph S. Scorsone is an instructor in the department of graphic design, Temple University, Tyler School of Art (Elkins Park, Pa. 19126). He received his MFA in design from the University of lllinois. Mr. Scorsone is currently teaching courses in graphic design and dimensional design.
