Abstract

The author discusses the development of Fluxus as a community of individuals who responded to complex, context-specific interactions among themselves, yet who persisted in their struggle against the codification of their activities into "artistic cohesion." Myths of periods of ideological unity and the hierarchy of status dependent upon participation in key Fluxus events are refuted while and attempt is made to provide an overview of consensus among scholars, curators and critics concerning core and peripheral membership in the Fluxus circle.
