Inclusive Interaction: Ability Enhancing Multimedia Design

Abstract

This article presents issues raised in designing an interactive multimedia software interface as a teaching aid for an inclusive preschool user group. Issues such as: message variance caused by the disappearance of information when media access varies by user; finding commonalities across a broad user base out of which to build viable interface metaphors; among others, are presented within the description of the project team's approach to human computer interaction design. The software project is a cooperative project between East Carolina University School of Art's Environmental Design Program and School of Education's Remedial Education Activity Program, an inclusion preschool open to children with all levels of motor, sensory and cognitive ability, including typical children.
