Mike Zender received his BS in Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati in 1973, his MFA in Graphic Design in 1977 from Yale University and currently holds titles as Emeritus Professor of Design and Graduate School Fellow at the University of Cincinnati.
A third-generation typesetter and designer, Mike founded and operated the design practice Zender + Associates, Inc. for thirty years where his award-winning work and that of his associates was published regularly and exhibited broadly. Professor Zender is a past president of Cincinnati AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) and in 2009 was named a National Fellow of the AIGA for his contributions to design and design education. In 2012 Mike was named a Graduate and Research Fellow of the University of Cincinnati in recognition of his research contributions. Professor Zender has written two books on design, numerous journal articles, and serves as Editor of the communication design research journal Visible Language.
Professor Zender’s research on communication through simple symbols such as icons and pictograms, specifically in the medical domain, and the application and testing of these in a global cross-cultural communication context, is uncovering principles for communication design and design research.
