Computer Mediated Communication as a Force in Language Change
Abstract
This paper develops a formalized linguistic perspective from which to explore how the medium of communication influences both what ideas can be expressed and how these ideas are expressed. This linguistic perspective enables the use of computers as a replacement for writing, and as a replacement for speech, to be examined in detail. The asymmetric influences between writing and speech are discussed. It is possible to anticipate some of the changes that may occur to these traditional means of communication as people make increasing use of computerized systems for information exchange. The linguistic concept of "register" is extended to computer-based communications, and it is noted that there is an increased tendency for aggression to be displayed when talking terminal to terminal. Finally, the impact of developments in networking and computer conferencing on the social uses of communication are considered.Downloads
